The Kairos Editorial Review Process

The most unique feature of Kairos, our editorial review process includes three distinct tiers, or stages of review.

Prospective contributors to the journal begin the editorial review process by sending the following to Co-Editors Douglas Eyman and James A. Inman:

  • A cover email, outlining the webtext's goals and how the webtext fits with Kairos' editorial emphasis on rhetoric, technology, and pedagogy.

  • A current URL of the webtext or webtext-in-progress to be considered; or a zipped collection of its files.

  • Names of two members of the current Kairos editorial board who the author/s believe would best be able to evaluate their submission.

Tier One
When the the co-editors receive a submission, they evaluate it, deciding if it is indeed appropriate for Kairos and if it is of sufficient quality to merit entering it into our formal editorial review process. If the co-editors agree, then they bring the submission to the entire editorial staff, where the webtext is further evaluated for its addressing of Kairos' publishing interests and its scholarly value.

Tier Two

If the editorial staff decides that a submission is appropriate and of high quality, then the co-editors bring the webtext to Kairos' editorial board. The entire editorial board discusses the submission for a full week, coming to a collaborative assessment of its quality and potential to be published in Kairos.

Tier Three

If the editorial board together decides that a submission is of high quality, then the co-editors assign three editorial board members to work directly with the webtext's author or authors. The board members guide revisions, based on the editorial board's comments and evaluation. And while advancement to this editorial stage is not a guarantee of publication, it does reflect a significant investment in the submission via the specific assignment of editorial board members. Our intention is to publish the webtext, if the author or authors complete the revisions requested in consultation with the editorial board members.
