How does Part A relate to the class?

Part A requires that students reflect on their past and current learning processes;  quite simply, two of the main goals of any composition course are to learn and to foster critical thinking and connections. Thus, Part A allows students to make the connection between their past and their present learning processes; Part A relates to the observations because while students  are writing their observations, they are reflecting on the day's learning and activities. Likewise, Parts B & C allow students to reflect on their learning over the course of the semester. Finally, the work samples demonstrate the student's learning and (hopefully) growth.

If the connections between Part A and the other components of the LRO are explained, it is much easier for students to write about their own learning connections!
