"I hate using the computer"

For most students, this is not a problem. However, there is usually always one student per class that is reluctant to work with a computer (except when a paper must be typed). Part of this reluctance stems from students' conceptions of the computer as nothing more than a digital typewriter. The other part of the problem is usually a fear of the computer. Some students think they are technologically cursed, while others resist computers.

This problem can be remedied several ways: 1) Explain the LRO in your syllabus and in class. 2) Explain that the LRO is an integral part of this class and takes the place of a traditional project or paper. 3) Explain that the computer is an integral part of the class — as important as the textbook. 4) Spend time going through the LRO and explaining it.

Although reluctant students may not come out of your class as computer lovers, they will probably have more confidence in and appreciation of computers and the Internet.
