Each reader confers his or her unique structure upon the text using threads of particular interest and personal relevance. The evolving structure for each individual participant, moreover, may differ from the structure that emerges out of a whole conference, which, as Paul Taylor put it in 1992, exhibits a "coherence . . . [that] rises spontaneously as the result of dynamic interaction . . . (a feature of chaotic phenomena)" (140). The organizational strategies of the linear text, however, the patterns inherited from the "modes of discourse"--comparison/contrast, classification, extended definition, and so forth--as well as introductions, summaries, transitions, and conclusions, are irrelevant.
