swe

The goal of basic writing is to introduce students to the role Standard Written English (SWE) plays in the university community. In this way, basic writing was perhaps the "right" place for John to become accustomed to working in written English, but there is some much more that needs to happen for Deaf students encountering the University. The unspoken requirements for familiarity with SWE need to be articulated, and some means of communicating the level at which students will be expected to work in SWE. There were many gaps beyond the Deafened Moment that faced John, including but not limited to familiarity with SWE, to understanding the expectations of the University, and to accepting the possibility of having to repeat basic writing classes until he could handle the writing expectations in the rest of the curriculum.
