Mike Rose on Critical Literacy

Sudol and Horning quote Rose defining critical literacy in Lives on the Boundary. Rose explains that students come to the University with the ability to summarize, write personal responses to texts, and repeat what a teacher offered in an information-based lecture.

But, they have considerable trouble with what has come to be called critical literacy: framing an argument or taking someone else's argument apart, systematically inspecting a document, an issue, or an event, synthesizing different points of view, applying theory to disparate phenomena, and so on.
