Problems Created by Distances: Video-Based Teaching vs. Text-based Pedagogies

Distance education is often aptly named, that the distance between teacher and student and between student and student is greatly magnified by television. I have been teaching a linguistics course for several years through interactive video, supplemented by newsgroups.

In my presentation,sI will contrast the spirit of cooperation on the newsgroup with the atmosphere in the TV studio, and will give the results of a survey showing, I hope, that those students who interacted in the newsgroup felt more connected to what was happening than those that did not.
