Huck's raft was made of wood and rope. Ours is made of plastic and cable. Huck did not want to drown. Neither do we, but anyone who uses e-mail regularly recognizes drowning as a distinct possibility. In truth, however, instructors interested in online technology can create their own oars and rudder by solid planning, by anticipating problems, and by gasping for air at the right times. When that fails, as it will, and they find themselves snagged on political driftwood, then treading water and allowing the current to change their direction is a viable option. Downstream may turn out to be even better.
