Writing as we know it, as I am writing right now, can be the same as the pictures I drew on postcards for this project. They are both a form of communication. They are an expression of individual thoughts. The only difference is that writing in this way is a social construct that everyone understands. The letters I am using to construct words to write this are widely accepted symbols that everyone can interpret. The postcards that I have been drawing are symbols as well, just symbols that people simply do not know the meaning of until they read the back of the postcard with the legend explaining how to read it.
