Unlike most rhet/comp teachers, I do not teach or
grade with such an
assumption in mind (see Faigley, 122), because
"To ask students to write authentically about the self assumes
that a unified
consciousness can be laid out on the page. That the
self is constructed in socially and historically specific
discursive practices is
denied" (Faigley 127).
