THE ROLE OF HISTORY IN TEACHING


Allow me to briefly address the purpose that is served by introducing composition students to the history of JAZZ.

While it may appear self-evident to most academics and teachers of writing, for many college freshmen the idea of a discursive regime

being produced,
           having emerged,
                      and being situated historically
is often (at best) very dimly apprehended.

By insisting that our students account for the development of the language tools they use, we increase their power to use them more effectively; which is to say that by recognizing how language is both transformed and transforming, they will be empowered to manipulate this instrument with greater dexterity, and with a wider palette and a broader range of understanding.
